Why I Give

Every gift begins with a story — of opportunity, connection and a belief in what’s possible. Our alumni and friends give not only out of gratitude for what they’ve experienced, but out of a shared commitment to the missions of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). Their generosity fuels discovery, expands access and strengthens the communities we serve.

We’re honored to share a few of their voices — stories that capture the passion, purpose and enduring impact behind every decision to give.

Rosemary Schultz, MD ‘85

"My education has allowed me to live my life as I wish. And that’s the greatest gift anyone could hope for. Now I feel it’s my turn to help students who have similar aspirations. That’s why I put the UW in my will. My hope is that a more enlightened generation will make the world a better place."

“UW’s medical school curriculum thoroughly prepared me for busy residency rotations. A cornerstone of that curriculum is alumni support and mentorship.”

Jason Carr

Jason Carr, MD ‘14

“The unique culture, opportunities, and resources at SMPH were crucial to my growth and success. I give to ensure future students have the same quality experience and fewer barriers to achieving great things.”

Marcia Richards, MD ’70

"The joy and satisfaction of practicing medicine and engaging in classical music are the two things that have given my life the most meaning, with the exception of my family. I established a scholarship because I want to make the financial burden of a medical education a little easier to someone who shares my two loves."

“My husband, Dr. Gary Lyons, taught medical students for over 25 years. I give to continue Gary’s legacy of supporting students, particularly those facing additional challenges, to become the best doctors that they can be.”

“Funding my medical education was a struggle and it is no different for today’s students. I decided to make a difference for someone by establishing an endowed scholarship.”

Natalie Taylor, MD ‘18

"I give to WMAA’s Stethoscope Fund to kickstart the next generation of leaders in medicine and to pay forward the gift once bestowed upon me."

“I grew up in a rural area of Wisconsin and received an excellent education through state schools, including the UW. I give because I want to give back.”

Peter Springberg

Peter Springberg, MD ‘66

“Wisconsin is in my heart. My parents met at UW and I was an undergraduate and a medical student at UW. When I was able, I began donating to the school, eventually establishing two medical student scholarships. On, Wisconsin!”
