20,000 Organs Transform Lives

More than 55 years after surgeons performed the first kidney transplant at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (now University Hospital) in 1966, the UW Health Transplant Center became the first and only transplant program in the Midwest to surpass 20,000 transplanted organs, according to Dixon Kaufman, MD, PhD, FACS, medical director of the center.

Jeannette Munro: A Woman Who Broke Boundaries

At a time when female physicians were rare and when many general practitioners questioned the necessity of specialists, Jeannette Munro, MD ’27, who earned her medical degree in the University of Wisconsin Medical School [now the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH)] Class of 1927, became the first pediatrician and first female physician in Princeton, New Jersey.[1]

MD Student Turns Hardship Into Opportunity

Sonam Dolma’s journey to medical school began in Bir Tibetan Colony, a Tibetan refugee settlement in Northern India, where she was born in 1997. Her father, Gyurmey Namgyal, and his brother had fled there on foot from Eastern Tibet to escape the Chinese Communist regime.
